Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — James Michael Tyler

    mbrandle — 21 years ago(May 13, 2004 09:53 PM)

I remember when Mike was much younger went to school with him up until, I guess the 5th/6th grades, when he moved in with his sister still remember the pond in front of his mom's house
silly kids we were, we tried to write our own sci-fi stories (wonder whatever happened to them :P) remember him as having quite an artistic talent his illustrations were awesome
Anyway hope he sees this: "Congratulations, Mike!" hope to see you on the screen again soon.

i think he was only actually cast because he could work an expresso machine and he was working at some coffee house in Los Angeles
what a lucky guyworking at some random coffee house, then suddenly getting picked to be in one of the best shows in pop culture

I live up the street from that pond - I grew up fishing there.
Original poster, quick question - Who are you? I probably know your family.
Winona is mighty small, after all.

You guys definitely need to talk.privately. Neat that more than one of you in this thread know JMT. The Private Messages link is in the upper right hand corner of this page.
WOW, his is quite a story!
The tragedies in his life and going from anonymity to acting on one of the greatest TV shows/sitcoms in history, is quite a big thing for him, even if he was in the background most of the time and was only a semi-regular. I'm sure the show paid him quite good.
I didn't really like his character, Gunther, on Friends, but I'm sure he is a good, solid guy in everyday life. I'm glad he was able to rise above those tragedies and make a decent life for himself.

I knew James Michael Tyler in high school. We attended T.L. Hanna, Anderson, S.C together from 1976 - 1980. This is the same school highlighted in the movie "Radio" starring Ed Harris and Cuba Gooding, jr.
Back then he went by Mike. I remember that he was a good guy - a little on the quiet side with a great sense of humor.
For years while watching friends, I'd look at the Gunther character and try and figure out why he looked so familiar. It was only near the end of the series that I finally figured out that Gunther was Mike with platinum hair and now goes by James.
Oh well, I am glad that Mike has done well and wish him continued success.

That had to have been really cool to watch and wonder how you knew him and then have that moment of, "Oh my gosh, I know him from high school!" What areb68 the chances?!
