It doesn't work for me.
The eye bulging, jaw clenching, completely unnatural method of acting doesn't make sense when most of the other actors around you are acting naturally.
I'm watching him in the 101's repeats of Oz. In some scenes you can see the actors interacting with him struggling to maintain their own naturalism because he's sooo over the top. But Oz is way uneven in it's casting. Some people are incredible and some are hard to watch.
Other examples of this might be Toshiro Mifune, Angela Bassett or Jack Nicholson in The Departed.
Sometimes it works, for example Denzel Washington in anything, Jack Nicholson in most things. I'm not sure where the line gets crossed.
So I just wished he'd dial the 'intensity' down, BUT at the same time I can totally see him as Howlin' Wolf.
Only Beyonce as Etta James has kept me from seeing Cadillac Records. -

i agree. i remember when he was in 'in sickness and in health' and liked him then. it's been nice to see his career develop over the years. i think he's a great actor and, as you say, under-rated.
oops, just noticed i said virtually the same thing on another thread 3 years ago!
i hope eamonn knows how proud we all are of him back in the uk
