I always loved this Cavett story:
Cavett tells this story about how Jack Warden came home after the war and tried to get into acting. He gets an agent who tries to find him roles. So, Warden is working in a garage as an auto mechanic when the agent calls him and declares that he finally got him an audition with John Houseman, who was casting this big Broadway production King Lear, and needed soldiers and knights. You gotta get down there now!, the agents says, They are going to squeeze you in at 1:00PM. Warden objects that hes at work, covered in grease. 1:00PM doesnt give him chance to shower and change. Just drop what you are doing and get down there! So, Warden rushes to the theatre to read for John Houseman. When he gets to there hes ushered into a room where Houseman looks oil-smeared Warden up and down disdainfully and dryly asks, What role do you see yourself playing? Realizing that there is no way this man was casting him, Warden shrugs his shoulders and asks,
beep! Whos playing Lear?
