Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Peter Wingfield

He truly does. He has the nose, the sharp eyes and the body. It's too bad no producers have thought about it. It would be wonderful to see Peter featuring as a main character in a series. He would have been an awesome and wicked Sherlock Holmes!
I heard BBC is having a new pilot called "Sherlock", and they have casted Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock. I like Benedict Cumberbatch (he is wonderful in Amazing Grace and Starter for Ten). However, after reading all the Sherlock Holmes novels, I have to say honestly that Cumberbatch does not have the "air" to play Sherlock Holmes. Wingfield would be a more suitable choice

now that you mention it he does have the likeness of peter cushing a bit
i think Peter Wingfield is a very underrated actor who is sadly under used i wish he was in more stuff his roll in highlander was verry interesting and i thought he added a slightly different slant to the roll that a lesser actor would fail at,
you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid

The BBC series with Cumberbatch is a done deal and in its second series. It's a very modern take on Holmes and Cumberbatch is doing a fine job.
Meanwhile, Peter is playing Dr. James Watson on "Sanctuary" who is supposed to be the inspiration for Holmes. He brings a lot to that character. It's a recurring role, but he only has appeared a couple of times last season and has filmed one for the next season.

Hm, that's true.. Now that you mention(ed) it (in 2010 g) - he does have the looks. Not as that troubled as Jeremy Brett, but.. yep. He could be Sherlock Holmes.

Even though this thread is old, and Sherlock (the BBC TV series) has been out for a while now - I must say that Cumberbatch in his role as Sherlock Holmes totally reminds me of Peter Wingfield! A little bit in facial features - nose, cheekbones - but in particular some mannerisms, voice intonations, even his smile.

                Absolutely.
He looks very much like the original illustrations in The Strand.
Cumberbatch is a good actor but I can't get by his looks. He just doesn't look like Holmes.
I'm having much more fun watching Johnny Miller in Elementary. I think it's a better contemporary spin as well.
