She starred in JAMAICA INN in 1939! There may be a few of them left today, but the great stars of THE Hollywood era ARE disappearing.So sad!

Yes I forgot Maureen O' Hara also though most of her films were 1940s on She did begin in the 1930s I tried to get a petition going for Maureen O'Hara to receive a special Oscar..Shall we try again ? Shes a legend ,great actress, a true beauty Never been nominated for an Oscar all those great films: How Green Was My Valley,The Miracle On 34th St, The Quiet Man,The Black Swan,McClintok,Jamaica Inn, * so many others !!She should be honored by The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (Oscar) soon

Actually Jane Wyman (whom I love dearly) was very much still a starlet at the end of the 1930's, major stardom did not come her way until 1945 although in 1940 she had made it to "leading lady" status. Jennifer Jones did not become a star until 1943, her 1930's films were strictly "B" movies and she was very much an unknown until 1943. Joan Fontaine, too, was strictly a leading lady/B lead in the 1930's although she appeared in supporting roles in two of the great 1939 classics, GUNGA DIN and THE WOMEN. Jane, Joan, and Jennifer were really no more (and arguably less) a star than other surviving leading ladies of the 1930's like Mary Carlisle and Anita Page who never cracked superstardom.
I would say Olivia De Havilland and Luise Rainer are the last of the major stars of the 1930's although Olivia was a bit closer to leading lady than major star at the time and Luise was never quite a major star despite two great Academy Award-winning roles. -

We forgot Gloria Stuart who is 98 years old and was Rose is Titanic 1997. She made a dozen of movies in the thirties and disapperared from the screen for many years until Titanic, and there are few more who were born in 1910: Anita Page, Mary Lou Cook, Billy Jocobs, Luise Rainer, Arthur Gardner, Dorothy Janis, Lupita Tovar, Yvette Lebon.
