Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Kathleen York

Kathleen York's "In The Deep" was nominated for the Academy Award for best original song. Very deserving. The song was used so effective in "Crash," I'm glad to learn it was an original work specifically for the movie.
The other two nominees were a song from "Hustle & Flow" and Dolly Parton's tune from "Transamerica."
    Congratulations, Kathleen!

I'm confused as to why this song was nominated. It's a great song, don't get me wrong there, but it appeared on York's 2003 album The Velvet Hour, so how does it count as "original?"

As long as it was recorded for use in the film (not necessarily released) before being used in other media, it qualifies. It's likely that it was recorded for the film before being recorded for the CD.

I absolutely loved the song, it fit so well at the end of the movie, hopefully it will win!

Mindblowing song! A beautiful poem into the center of my heart!
                  Lyric, elegant, human, heartbreaking.

how weird. i have always liked kathleen as an actress, but i never knew she was a singer or composer too. it was shocking when the nominations were announced and i saw her picture. took me a while to realize the singer and the actress were the same person.

In The Deep is such a beautiful song. It's a shame that it didn't win the Oscar.
