Ziyi was supposed to be a cute nextdoor girl in the Sophie's revenge, however her eyes revealed toughness again as in her most other movies. While Fan Binbin's acting surprised me. Binbin is definitely the highlight of Sophie's revenge although more than 60% of film is about Ziyi.

Who cares for news ?> Only silly fans and silly readers do read such news.
Zhang never asked for news. Reporters wrote them and readers like them. It showed has pulling power.
She even produced Sophie's Revenge.
She is already so good in acting, not much room to improve. All she need is good director. -

You are right.
Tang Wei only made one movie. Still early to tell whether she is really a good actress or "only good for that role" or all due to a good director's work.
While Gong Li was really good, I find all always the same character played and her best work all those few directed by Zhang Yi Mou. I doubt she could have any new breakthrough in other character role.
So far, ZZ has proven well. She can be equally convincing as innocent, seductive or in action. House of Flying Daggers really proved she is really good. She fooled all the audience(you know what I mean ?) Her last one in slapstick as you mentioned is another new role I am looking forward to see. Gong Li and Maggie Cheung are both good but not as versatile as her. -

Strange, I know foreigners know her better in Concubine but Asians don't think she really shine there(no fault of hers). She was much overshadowed by Leslie Cheung in Concubine.
I wonder whether it's because foreigners mostly have not seen her in her earlier movies ?
I felt she was better in Red Lantern, Ju-dou, To Live and Qiu-qi. -

That was totally HIS film. That guy was riviting.
Obviously, he had a few problems.
Ziyi, on the other hand, seems pretty level headed. Except for her BF. Who can explain how a woman's heart beats? I have to give her that. If we ever meet, I'm sure she'll dump him. -

Seeing Concubine again, you will realise that movie is not near to perfect. It was Leslie that made that movie shine.I ranked Leslie's better movies are those 3 directed by WKW.
BTW, do you know that Leslie got 6 movies out of the top 10 in the 100 Chinese movies selected during movies 100 years selection, ranking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th placing. What a legend !! No one could be 1/2 as near anywhere in the world and considering that he was als2000o the biggest singer in HK. An incredible achievement. Even Elvis, the King could not achieve so much in both areas. His only weakness was his love for Tong that killed him.
Back on Gong Li, have you watched her 4 early movies I mentioned ? If you did, you will not like her now. Those 4 are her best.
I think Zhang is more careful in selecting her movies now before being "overexposed" in poor quality movies. She has already done enough to prove her acting kills in her movies. All she need now is to do 1 good movie every 2 to 3 years and if she carry on working until 60(which I think she won't, she is another one that care more for love life) she will be the greatest star of Asian cinema. -

I have to say Zhang hasn't improved her acting skills in the past 5 years. I am very disappointed in "Sophie's Revenge". The only highlight of this movie I'll say is Fan Bingbing. Not because Bingbing is pretty, but because she did very well in this movie. This is just like Meg Ryan. Meg was much better in her early career movie "when Harry Met Sally" in 1989. Zhang is very pretty. However being an actress is a professional career instead of just showing pretty face.

If you haven't noticed, she is focusing more on producing films. That's where the money and influence really are. She will be controlling her market. Many, many entertainers are doing that over here. Compared to what they make performing, they can make 20 or 30 times as much producing.
China is a rapidly growing market and she is steering her ship in that direction.
I thought Sophie was an indication of how that will go. Getting star-power together in a marketable film isn't easy. I haven't seen Sophie yet, but I've seen this happen alot over here recently.
I think Ziyi doesn't want to be an idol. She's gone beyond that. I think she needs to move to the States now. Set up an office in LA. -

what she will and won't do. What she is attached to and what she isn't attached to. I can't really remember hearing from her, or her manager that she was doing Snow Flower. The funky Chinese press picked it up and everyone accepted it as fact. She may never have been attached to Snow Flower. If she was producing, she wouldn't pull out casually. Not sensible. When I see how that is developing, I can't see how she could have ever agreed to get involved with it.
She can produce anywhere in the world from LA. There is better shopping and more personal freedom there, too.
I think Ang Lee has proven adequately you can live ab68nd work in the States and be international. Ziyi doesn't have to do just American movies, she can do French, German, Spanish, or what have you. I just think it's got to be negative to work in China when so many people dump on her every day.
I'd leave. If I was her, I just come back to make films. She already has more frequent flyer miles than just about anyone.
She'd have to pay taxes over here, though. If she's like me, she won't like that.
