He wrote the song for/about the lead singer of The Associates, who in turn wrote one about Morrisey.
Was Billy5b4 MacKenzie gay? What Associates song was for/about Morrissey.

I'd say he's more bisexual than gay; after all, he has flirted with several female interviewers over the years. Lyrically, he and Marr both have said that the Smiths "wanted to write for everyone."
Johnny Marr once said "Morrissey doesn't participate in sex at the moment and hasn't done so for a while; he's had a lot of girlfriends in the past and quite a few men friends." Moz himself even admitted to having a small fling with one man in the early 80s.
