I've really only seen her on her guest appearances on Chuck and Desperate Housewives, but from what I've seen, she does a pretty bad asian-american accent. This is coming from a person who has to hear it from her parents every day.

What exactly is an Asian-American accent? If you mean broken English, then no, there's no way she will "hear it from her parents every day." Notice that her parents are originally from Singapore, an English-speaking country. English is their official language and their first language taught in school. Mother tongue, in her case, Chinese, is only taught at a second language level. There is nothing American about the Singaporean-English accent, if anything, it has more in common with the English accent.

on desperate housewife she had to put on a very chinese accent to fit the role of a housemaid. it is an accent, that's definitely not how she speaks in real life..lol. and she has been living in the states since she was a teenager, and i think she sounds like well, most people from california.
and its true, im f2000rom singapore. and we speak english as a first language here. the accent is not american or british, its singaporean, and is quite light, without much inflications (depends on the individual of course). pronounciations are more british however, for example, "ask" is "ah-sk" as opposed to the American "ass-sk", "dance" is "Dahn-ce" as opposed to "Dence".

She voiced the audio version of "The Joy Luck Club" and I thought she sounded wonderful. I doubt they'd ask a hackneyed voice actress to do a book full of bad accents.

Anyone who doubts Gwendolyn's ability to imitate accents should listen to this interview:
              http://www.scpr.org/programs/offramp/2010/11/18/
Here she discusses the wide array of Asian accents and their place within American popular culture. And she demonstrates her amazingly accurate ability to mimic these accents (the Filipino one really made me laugh ).
              'Nuff said.
She also describes growing up with an accent herself and how she was bullied into shedding it.
