Teena Marie is more of a sistah than most of these so called sistah singers. For one as it was stated before Teena unlike Whitney, Beyonce,Mariah, Janet did not sell out to the Pop audience. She eat, sleeps, and exubes R&B. Teena received her sistah card from the Black community wayy before you and I were even conceived, so by saying Teena ain't no sistah is pretty much an insult. Who else do you know that was bad enough to role wit Rick James during his heyday plus at a time when white R&B singers weren't even popular. Teena is and will always be The Ivory Queen of Soul. Even though the music industry does not give her the due credit she more than deserves, the woman is still belting out hits at 50 years old.
Oh please, Teena stole her sista card alright. It wasn't handed over to her on a silver platter. Making hits at 50 years old? She hasn't put out an album in a long time. Must be that voice of hers thats getting tired and wore out. Which "real" R&B singer doesn't eat, sleep, and exhales R&B? Sound like you're giving one person alot of credit while throwing others out to dry.

Actually, if you want to be "age knowledgable", I was out when then woman was singing and I don't see whats the big deal about her. You may like her music but I don't. You got that shenawhore? Please take that **** out your mouth and be nice for a change. Just because I don't like her wannabe music doesn't make me a hater.

The reason you dont see what the big deal is is bec5b4ause you were a baby in your crib at the time. IF you were aliveyou were not old enough to be part of what was going on at the time. This woman is not from your generation. Just the way you post makes it obvious you are too young to GET IT.
Thats like me saying I dont get elvis. OF COURSE I DONT because he was before my time. I was not there when he was HOT and at the top of his career. Teen was before you time
              Fassygirl.
How the hell do you know she wasn't part of my time? Come on now, stop trying to be some kind of music expert, and telling people that they weren't around at the time of a particular artist.

Who the hell made you an authority over someone? I can speak and say what I want about an artist. I don't care how old they are. You know and I know this woman did not come out before my time. She is not Aretha Franklin, or any "real" soul singer like her alright.

oh kay!!! the gloves are off!!
apparently, you failed to notice in 2004, LA DONA' was her first album since PASSION PLAY in 1994, which did well(#3 at r n'b, #6 at pop). her current album, SAPPHIRE, came out in May of this year at #3 r n'b, #24 pop. in between those records she was doing shows, touring, and raising her daughter. b-sides, how many female r n' b artists (black or otherwise, older or younger) have almost total creative leeway with their work (writing, singing, producing, arranging) practically from the beginning; she had that from her second motown record to now. i would say very few. rather hear that 100 x over than some of the crap (r'n'b and otherwise) on the radio or whatever is out there now.

Markus010167, that was an AWESOME post! You said everything I wanted to say, and then some! Not only that, but I even learned a few things from your well written post. Thanks again!
Rufus317, you finished it up with even more great knowledge! You took even more words out of my mouth about this great legend. Yet another great post. Thanks!
I'll just add my little two cents by saying Teena Marie is a TRUE legend in every sense of the word, and no one's IGNORANT words can ever take that away from our sista "Lady T." She has EARNED her place in music history, and in our hearts as fans!!!

Great legend? In your opinion she's a great legend. I think you need to get some knowledge of music yourself before triying to applaud someone else on their knowledge. Its a fact, this woman isn't black yet she tries to be.

How does she "try" to be black? Just because she sings R&B? So I guess artists like Tracy Chapman, Lenny Kravitz and Seal are trying to be white because they don't sing R&B?
And I would appreciate it if you didn't come back with a nasty comment as I have not directed one at you. I'm just trying to see where you're coming from.

Now, to the "crownprince23," if that comment was directed to me.You don't know me from a hole in the wall. AND for your infomation I happen to have plenty of music knowledge. HOWEVER, your comments were based on racial sterotypes, NOT music. How can anyone with ears attached to their head question this womans talent, by claiming she's "trying" to be black. How ridiculous do you sound. Seems like the only one on here lacking music knowledge is YOU!!!

Thank you jaib. You sound very intelligent and open minded yourself. I absolutely hate it when people make such ridiculous statements. When will people understand that you can't "act" a race or culture? When will they get that just because you may adapt or be influenced by an aspect of another culture (be it music, dress, whatever) does not mean you are trying to be a part of that culture?

So very true, and I couldn't agree with you more! Teena Marie came into the music industry the right way, and that's just being herself. She has earned her place in music history, and no one can ever take that from her. TALENT is TALENT, no matter what package it comes in.

To whoever said that teena's voice wasnt as good as it used to be, It's true! Her voice is even better now then it was when her first album came out. I saw her perform yesterday and she proved that she is the IVORY QUEEN OF SOUL. She isnt a sell out she is what she is a great artist and Talent. She doesnt need anyone to write her music for her, she isnt some sort of generic Brand she is Lady T.
Teena Is Blacker th5b4en most of the other so called R&B singers, just because her skin is ivory doesnt mean she isnt Black, you dont have to be black to be Black. Brian Gumble aint that "black" neither is Al Roker, And Oprah these days.

Im not Gonna lie I am one of Teena's younger Fans, But im an old soul. Ive seen old "bootleg" recordings of Teena when I was younger. My father twice a week would have me sing to Teena songs and study them up until the day before he died. My mother who isnt A Teena fan, and a Singer would wonder why Teena, why not Whitney, or Patti La bell. After she went with me to see Teena last night, she finally saw why my dad made me do that, because Teena is a talent. Did my mother come out of the concert a Teena Fan, HELL NO! but did she respect T Yes.
As for the race thing, Im Almost every major Race but Pacific Islander. Im not Majority Black but most people embrace me as being Black. My half siblings who are Panamainian they arent thought of as hispanic because they have been raised as black, they dont look Black but they Are BLACK. Teena May have to write on a piece of paper that she is white, but her soul is BLACK.
