Is he really mentally ill? How can someone be so successful without having control of their thoughts and actions? It seems more like he has just been sucked into the conspiracy theory vortex like many other gullible people out there.

Yes, it could be the conspiracy thing, I mean a lot of people seem to have taken a step into that particular abyss over the past two years.
