Hi guys. So I was in New Orleans the other day about to get a massage and in walks Evan Goldberg with his friend Ariel Shaffir. Evan was wearing his typical "I give up" attire- dirty shorts, old earth toned short sleeve button up, and sandals. He was playing "Biker Baron" on his phone which caused him to really slow down the line to sign in. Ariel was eating a milky way and kept raving about the new "Assassin's Creed" to a distracted Evan.
He sat next to me in the waiting room. He must have heard me talking on the phone to my girlfriendwith some not very nice language. Evan commented,2000 "things not going so well sport?". I replied, "Wellmy girlfriend keeps complaining that I don't take her to dinner enoughbut she knows I hate spending money." Evan smiled calmly and replied, "I know how you feel son. Women are a struggle for men like us, and there's not much we can do abouthowever, I'm concerned about the way you were talking to her. Why do you get so angry?" I really thought about it and said, "Well, I guess I hope that if I get mad at her enough times she will stop bugging me about it." Evan put his hand on his chin, thought for a second and said, "You know, the only way to really earn a women's respect is to treat her with respect. If you calmly explain to her your stinginess and how you are saving for the future, for HER well-being, she will see why you are so rightfully cheap. When you yell and fuss, it just brings her down and hurts her. She obviously likes you a lot and doesn't need to be scolded. The outcome of an uplifting, encouraging discussion is positive, and a scolding? Negative. If you two are ever going to keep this relationship going, I would suggest focusing on building your patience and learn to encourage, instead of being condescending. And try a compromise. Instead of taking her to a nice restaurant, take her to a really cool buffet. I go to buffets all the time, they're really popular among us Hollywood type."
I told Evan that what he said made a lot of sense, and that I was glad he said something so inspiring. I showed him a picture of my girlfriend and her best friend. He said, "Wow, her friend is beautiful." I said, "That's Dana. She's gay and her dad's dead."
Evan replied, "I know someone like that."
What a great guy. Thanks Evan.
