Is he actually a good actor, or did he just get his foot in the door?

I've been over critical of many actors and movies in the past, so now I try to slow down and try to look at it from another perspective. But I STILL can't see why Jonah Hill has suddenly become good. As far as I'm concerned, he just somehow managed to get his foot in the door and talk to the right people. Now he's in all sorts of good movies. I don't get it. I don't think he's that good. He should stick to Seth Rogen movies.

exactly, me too. I was really impressed with him in the wolf of wall street he gave a great performance in it and he went against type in it which makes it even more impressive. that shows he has range.

Jonah grew up with his foot in the door, he was friends with Dustin Hoffmans kids, his dad worked with all sorts of famous bands and he was also friends with Adam Levine, and he has just taken most of the right steps to get himself where he is.
Listen to his Howard Stern interviews. -

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I also sometimes worry that I'm just going against the mainstream or just missing something others aren't (or being a "hater", as the kiddies say), but in the end, I just really can't buy into his acting.
Granted, though, The Wolf of Wall Street was really great. But seeing that it's the only serious role I could get behind him in, I find it difficult not to chalk that up to Scoseses direction and the helpful use of completely disguising his face, rather than Hills actual acting talent (dressing a guy up enough, apparently does wonders for losing him in character).
But eh, who knows. Perhaps we just really are hatin'. shrug -

I actually like Superbad, Get Him to the Greek, and those Seth Rogen-type movies. I recently rewatched The Wolf of Wall Street, and even though I thought he did a good job, I didn't love his casting. They made a big deal about how he worked hard to win the part, but when I see him on screen, all I see/hear is Jonah Hill.

I've got nothing against the dude, but he's pretty one note when it comes to comedy. I think that says more about today's poor comedy actors than anything else. I guess there are people out there that enjoy this particular style of dead pan, awkward humor. The whole Apatow gang is just one big poney trick. Rogen being stoned, Hill being fat, Cera being a virgin, etc etc.

I agree with you, and will take it even further.
I do no think he is that funny or talented as an actor. I think he has gotten to where he is by knowing the right people.
HOWEVER, there is no shame in making the best out of every opportunity presented to you in life.
Kudos to you Jonah Hill, and good luck with your career.
