The word isn't necessarily derogatory, but it is when directed from a white person to a black person as an insult, then it definitely is.
And no, this isn't an equal age. I would like it to be, but even in this supposedly enlightened decade, sexual and intimate violence against women is prevalent. Discrimination is still present. It is getting better, and I think you make a good point about the double standard, but there's a balance. Should a woman be allowed to get away with things based on her gender? No. But women generally tend to be weaker than men. A man punching a woman can usually do a lot more damage. Therefore, yes, Carl Blonsky should have taken the high route and sought to restrain the mother rather than attack her so brutally she needed to be taken to the hospital. In fact, that should be anyone's approach, man or woman alike.
