The idea is this: what if the nominees for Best Picture each year weren't nominated? Which films should have taken their place in that scenario? Pick your alternate selections for Best Picture and, if you wish, mention anybody who you feel was overlooked in any other category. No need to confine yourself to the types of films which typically get nominated or to English-language cinema. If you missed the previous years, they can be found on the classic film board.
All films released in 1937 are eligible, although it is worth noting that
Grand Illusion
, while listed on IMDb as being released in 1937 wasn't snubbed at all, but was instead nominated the following year.
The nominees were:
The Life of Emile Zola- William Dieterle
The Awful Truth - Leo McCarey
Captains Courageous - Victor Fleming
Dead End - William Wyler
The Good Earth - Sidney Franklin
In Old Chicago - Henry King
Lost Horizon - Frank Capra
One Hundred Men and a Girl - Henry Koster
Stage Door - Gregory La Cava
A Star is Born - William A. Wellman
My alternate picks:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - David Hand
Make Way for Tomorrow - Leo McCarey
A Day at the Races - Sam Wood
Marked Woman - Lloyd Bacon
You Only Live Once
Fritz Lang
"Praise be to Allah." - President Donald J. Trump, Easter Sunday 04/05/2026
- William Dieterle

Another year where I haven't seen the Winner:
The Life of Emile Zola
.
From the nominees list I'd keep:
The Awful Truth
,
Captains Courageous
,
Stage Door
and
A Star is Born
.
From your list, I haven't seen
Make Way for Tomorrow
. Both
Marked Woman
and
You Only Live Once
are nice.
A Day at the Races
is a pretty good Marx brothers' movie.
Le Grande Illusion
will have to wait till next year, as it was released in the USA in 1938.
I like Hitchock's movie,
Young and Innocent
from 1937.
Topper
is another nice 1937 movie.
The Prisoner of Zenda
with Ronald Coleman is pretty outstanding.
Easy Living
is a good screwball comedy with Jean Arthur.
The Prince and the Pauper
is fairly good.
The Hurricane
(John Ford) has some nice special effects.
Night Must Fall
is another good one.
They Won't Forget
is another I like. Lots of other good ones.
Captains Courageous- Victor Fleming
Stage Door - Gregory La Cava
The Prisoner of Zenda - John Cromwell
The Awful Truth - Leo McCarey
A Star is Born - William A. Wellman
A Day at the Races - Sam Wood
The Hurricane - John Ford
Topper - Norman Z. McLeod
They Won't Forget - Mervyn LeRoy
Young and Innocent - Hitchock
Captains Courageous
would be my pick to win, with
Stage Door
just a nose behind.
- Victor Fleming
