So Joel Macrea was once concidered hot if he showed sweat! LOL
There is also Veronica Lake before she Had to cut her hair.
and the usual William Demarest, Eric Blore and so on in cast.

I think its message that laughter is necessary is so true. People enjoy watching all kinds of films, but in tough and desperate times(such as the time this is set in)comic films providing some respite/escape from the dreary present are always welcome; such films will no doubt always prove popular.
I like McCrea and Lake in this. Love the scene between them involving the swimming pool.
Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly
      .

My second favorite Sturges after "
        Palm Beach story
" - I like Joel McCrea a lot in rom/coms and I wish he had made more, but he preferred Westerns.
I think this has the best plot/script of any Sturges movie.
Sullivan: I want this picture to be a commentary on modern conditions. Stark realism. The problems that confront the average man!
LeBrand: But with a little sex in it.
Sullivan: A little, but I don't want to stress it. I want this picture to be a document. I want to hold a mirror up to life. I want this to be a picture of dignity! A true canvas of the suffering of humanity!
LeBrand: But with a little sex in it.
John L. Sullivan: [reluctantly] With a little sex in it.

I think it is a good film, though not one of my favourites, my taste runs more to comedies. But the scene in the church is great.

Thanks for all replies and thoughts, and one move that hasn't been remade in CGI.

My favorite Sturges film. Its beautifully wrought message of the need for laughter moves me deeply every time I see it (to say nothing of its humor and human comedy throughout).
The time of the singing of the birds has come.
