"Police Story." created by Joseph Wambaugh, ex-cop, turned author offered some of the most realistic stories on tv at the time.

I agree with not remaking classic cop shows. I offer
        CHiPs (2017)
as a recent example. From what I've read, it is trashy, which is an insult to the "good guy" image of the original show. It's no wonder none of the original cast still alive are involved.
These shows were great in their time and IMO unless again set in that time would lose quality. For example, I watched a number of episodes of
        Highway Patrol (1955)
this year when it was on ME TV. Doing a 2017 version of that would suck IMO. In one of my reviews for an episode, I noted it showed an America that no longer exists.
Contemporary for the time cop shows can be great. I saw a mention of
Homicide: Life on the Street (1993)
here and I'll add my favorite,
        Robbery Homicide Division (2002)
        .

I almost never watched this when it was on, back in the Sixties, caught a few episodes on some digital channel the other night and was impressed by its mix of realism and police procedural. Strong character development, too, for supporting players, whether victims or perps. It's worth a look.
