Yes, the women cops on Ironside did advance the idea that we could be competent officers of the law. I was young in those days. It was TOUGH. I was in the medical field. Another point: Raymond Burr has still been the only successful disabled character on network television in law enforcement as Ironside.

This may have been the first leading lady television cop:

I wonder why the Goodlife network or any station or network does not air 'Police Woman'? I saw that a DVD set had come out, but suprised such a popular show in the 70's isn't on cable/dish tv what a bummer.

Caroline Proust who plays Police Captain Laure Berthaud in French cop series 'Spiral' (being shown on BBC i-player). Strong yet vulnerable in a delicious way.
If you haven't seen this, treat yourself. Better by far than 'The Wire'.

Julie Stewart as Sgt. Ali McCormick in all 98 episodes of Cold Squad. That's the terrific Canadian cop show Cold Case ripped off. She's super smart, hyper aggressive and not afraid to jump a guy's bones if she takes a liking to him.

Love Olivia on SVU..it's the only Law and Order I watch.
For the older stuff..how can you not mention Cagney and Lacey? Balancing all those problems and still bringing in the bad guys.
