It's a play on literally translating a language like Latin. So, in a way, yes. But the show is extremely stylized for effect as well.

The team that made the TV series were huge fans of the film. Lots of tributes throughout the series. That said, the series is a different beast and will turn off a lot of people due to it's hyper stylized sex and violence….

I think the violence does have a place in the story, but the sex is over-the-top and the only thing I'd change about the series. It would have titillated the hell out of me if I saw it as a 14 year old. But nowadays I even felt like skipping the scenes at points in the show. Lol.
