The team that made the TV series were huge fans of the film. Lots of tributes throughout the series. That said, the series is a different beast and will turn off a lot of people due to it's hyper stylized sex and violence….

I think the violence does have a place in the story, but the sex is over-the-top and the only thing I'd change about the series. It would have titillated the hell out of me if I saw it as a 14 year old. But nowadays I even felt like skipping the scenes at points in the show. Lol.

Really good movie. Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix were excellent. The scene where Maximus takes off his helmet and reveals to Commodus who he is was very well done, and still gives me goosebumps to this day. Maximus might be one of the most badass characters in all of cinematic history.

Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.
