Just finished, and it was pretty good.
Was that girl helping him? Was she an angel? But at the end, if she was, it’s confusing she got him where he wanted to go ( the ninth gate).
Those twins, were they real, or ghosts?
Depp plays a bit of a scum bag.

        Was she an angel?
        More like half-demon.

In the book she's a fallen but not the devil himself.

              Oh, there’s a book? Great!
So a fallen angel, which is what the devils are.

                I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Truth be told, I enjoyed it much more the second (and third) time I watched it.
When I saw the woman essentially "fly" down those steps, it totally threw me for a loop when it came to what I thought was going on, and who I thought she was.
I perceived her as a demon. Yes, she helped him find the
                Ninth Gate
                , but what
                was
the Ninth Gate? That bizarre sex scene at the end was pretty vivid, and I cannot imagine viewing that as anything but (at least partly) demonic in nature.
I also did not know there was a book! Now I want to read it!

Yeah the more I think about it, the more she seems on the dark side.
I do want to read the book.

Apparently, the movie is basically a extended part of a part taken from the book called The Club Dumas according to FAQ from IMDB:
The Ninth Gate is basically a sub-story from Pérez-Reverte's much longer and more complex novel about the search for a lost chapter of Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers (1844). The most notable change between novel and movie is that Polanski altered the appearance of the engravings in order to incorporate the faces of some of the actors. The final scenes from the movie also do not appear in the book, which ends with the botched attempt at summoning Lucifer using the engravings.
I hope a bear throw a book at you, moon at you, and do a tap dance wearing a thong and leather boots.

That sounds a lot more boring than the movie.

Langella has a bit of a creepy vibe about him, much the way Christopher Lee or Vincent Price did. It's as if they were made to play movie villains. He was spectacular in this role.

And it is making the right choice to avoid watching something a child rapist did.
