For my money, Elmore Leonard's
"Hombre
" has some of the toughest dialogue I've ever heard in a western.
Can you name any better?
There is no stint, dearth, or lack in my esteem for "Hombre".
And sure, there's lots of taut lines in Sergio Leone movies.
But are they really definitive? Lest us not forget:
"The Wild Bunch".
It's a flick overflowing with superb dialogue. Leonard easily outranks Willian Goldman. Never easy to do.
But the proof is in the pudding.
Of all the westerns I've ever seen, I would rank this one bit of interplay the very best:
Top this if yew kin.
DUTCH ENGSTROM:
"They'll be ready for us"
PIKE:
"I wouldn't have it any other way"
And strangely, of all actors, it is the great William Holden who utters it.
Holden! Who better?
