Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Music General

In general pop culture tends to react to the themes of an incoming presidency, and to any major events which take place during it. I believe that the Trump presidency is likely to have an unusually large impact on pop culture, for a number of reasons:

    • Trump is the first real "celebrity president". He is both a part and the product of celebrity culture. People with outsized personalities and an instantly recognisable image are not a traditional feature of American politics.
    • He is coming into power at the time a new generation (Generation Z) is becoming politically aware and will be able to vote. The Trump presidency will thus define this generation's culture and political outlook in the way Bush 43's did Generation Y.
    • Unlike Obama, Trump is coming into power at a time of severe geopolitical instability and domestic polarization. On the day he was officially elected, there were three terrorist attacks in Europe. He will have to make a number of radical changes to domestic and foreign policy if his presidency is to be successful. There is a chance of up to three new SCOTUS appointments as well.
When I think about the image and themes of Trump, they are of strength, heroism, nationalism, spontaneity, rediscovering lost national identity, channeling your masculinity and overt sexuality. And of course, no beep So in terms of trends, how is this going to affect music? How can you express the above in music? Obama's presidency and the culture which sprung from it has had 9w1 so/sp values. However Trump's presidency, and the culture which has already been created has and will have 3w4 sx/so values. They are like oil and water.
For a start, I think we are going to see a strong revival of hard rock, metal and old-school rap - of raw, intense, and socially provocative music. These musical styles have fallen out of favour in the Obama years. Honestly, I get the sense that the muse of music has been put on Xanax. Everybody is looking for a dreamy, easy sense of harmony and casual "coolness", so avoids anything extreme or confronting. Styles have been blended, diluted and mixed. Don't worry, be happy!
As someone who loves music, I can't help but feel excited that there is a chance to carve out whole new territory with a different, darker, more profound and dramatic sound. The "let's all come together" feel-good beep can't die soon enough.

No, I am not gay. Please stay on topic, please.
This comment is just another reason why I'm glad these boards are shutting down. These boards are no longer a place to have serious discussion about anything-it's all just a big competition to see can be the biggest douchebag ever.

When I think about the image and themes of Trump, they are of strength (obnoxious prick), heroism (draft dodger), nationalism (supported by KKK), spontaneity (twitter addict), rediscovering lost national identity (profiteering above ALL), channeling your masculinity (worrying about hand size) and overt sexuality (grabbin' pussy).
What more could we want from the leader of the free world?

Like this, though most Russians will be ok.
Donald Trump is the weak man's vision of a strong man.

Alt-right/conservatism is the new punk rock, or so I was told.

Will be like the 80's under thatcher.
Music's lyrics will reflect more disenchantmenteither veiled or openlyagainst a distasteful capitalist in the wrong job as a leader of a powerful country And their disenchantment with the calibre of the blinkered, reactionary 48% of the electorate who voted the pri¢ks in.
GOOD SKY YOU'VE GOT HERE McCINTYRE..WELL DONE!!!

I think of a vulgar conman. I'm not sure how that translates to music.
I know words. I have the best words - Donald J Trump, POTUS

Well, if those are really the traits of Trump then we can probably expect an upsurge in crotchless military bands.

There is no noun that cannot be verbed.

this is the perfect time for a late 60s/early 70s rock n roll protest revival

Relatively speaking, in a world that didn't have internet in every home or reality TV shows, Reagan was a celebrity president.
                          As for music?
More protest songs, be they punk, folk, pop, rock, rap or whatever.
                          Where is everybody?
