You make it sound as if Stand and rock music are still represented on Top40 radio lol.
It kind of is though. Rock and metal music really haven't evolved or changed much in the last 15 years or so. Whenever I do listen to modern rock radio, which is pretty rare, the stuff I hear generally sounds as is it just as easily could have came out in 2006 as 2016.

I'm afraid to click the links and subject my ears to what Metallica may have become. Aren't they a cacophonous caricature of themselves at this stage in the game?

From what ive heard this album is the very definition of meh. I guess id give it a 4.5/10 I mean the lyrics and videos can be really cringey but musically most of the songs are just dull and generic with a couple of standouts like Spit out the bone which are worth checking out.

I really like the new album especially the first 4 songs on the first disc and the last 2 songs on the second disc. In my opinion the album overall sounds better than St. Anger, Death Magnetic or Lulu. The deluxe edition disc 3 with Lords Of Summer, 3 covers and 10 live recordings seems like a much better deal then the originally planned riff changes/demos which most people probably wouldn't even listen to.

I'm hoping to buy the record soon. Hearing the title track had me excited and the good reviews are encouraging me even further. I never cared what the purists said, I'm a huge Metallica fan and hopefully they'll come to my home town when they tour to support the album. So far, I like the new album better than Death Magnetic which I also really liked.

I just listened to it and I thought it was fine. Mostly enjoyable but suffers from problems that they've had since at least the Black Album. Every song is too long, there are a ton of mid-tempo parts that don't do much, Lars can't come up with an interesting fill to save his life, etc.
On the plus side, there are some really solid riffs and solos, Rob is actually audible, and the production isn't physically painful to listen to like Death Magnetic. It will probably hold up better than that album.

there are a ton of mid-tempo parts that don't do much,
For the most part I've always thought Metallica were at their very best when they were playing slow or mid tempo stuff.

Those songs have mostly been bland for me going all the way back to Master of Puppets. The Thing That Should Not Be and Leper Messiah are far and away my least favorite songs on that album.

My least favorite on MOP is Damage Inc. (though I still like it) which is also probably the fastest song on the album. I guess i've just never really been a big speed metal fan. If it's TOO fast, it kind of looses the groove for me. I also like Slayer's mid tempo stuff better than their fast stuff. But in my opinion Megedeth did speed metal better than Metallica or Slayeror pretty much anyone else for that matter. Black Friday is probably the best speed metal song ever written.

Some of the riffs were pretty good, but the album overall really doesn't hold my attention. It's just too dull and generic. Metallica used to push the musical envelope and then started to reinvent themselves every few years. Now, they are clearly entrenched in a comfort zone.
It's really just Death Magnetic part 2.

It's really just Death Magnetic part 2.
If that's true, then I'll probably like it because I thought Death Magnetic was pretty solid aside from the production which was WAY too loud and distorted.
