OK the drum sound is a bit weird but you get used to it after like two listens back in 2003.
But the riffing on St. Anger is one million times better than the boring by the numbers metal on both Death Magnetic and Hardwired.

I'll take your word for it because I don't have the will to check out the other two albums.

None of these three albums are even good so what does it matter?

I don't know. I've never been a fan of generic rock riffing, no solos, and drums that sound like metal trash cans.

I haven't heard it in ages because it's the only Metallic album I could never really get into. I think part of my problem with St. Anger at the time is I was judging it as a Metallica album and it just didn't sound like the Metallica I knew and loved. maybe i need to give it a relisten with fresh ears and just forget that it's Metallica and judge it on its own merits.
What are words for when no one listens anymore

St Anger is pretty underrated, I would also add that Load and Reload are underrated too but I like Hardwired and Death Magnetic better. I still love Death Magnetic eight years on. The songs are great when played live.
Brony who is also a Metallica fan
