I think the scariest moment was when Dorothy was locked in the witch's castle and saw Uncle Henry and Auntie Em in the crystal ball. Then they faded, and the witch appeared!
    That was scary!
    I intend to live forever.
    So far, so good.

Yes! This was always the scariest scene for me! When I was little, I used to hide behind the couch and make someone tell me when the scene was over!

        As a kid

        1. Tornado - because it was a real thing & seemed inescapable.
        2. Hourglass - having your life being timed away!?!
        3. Gulch-Witch transformation in the tornado - that was f'd up.
        4. Flying monkeys - mostly the vast number in the background.
        5. Witch of the East's feet shrivelling up after the slippers are off.
          my essential 50

I can't remember being scared by the movie at all. When I showed it to my youngest siblings, they weren't scared by the witch or the winged monkeys or the tornado either.
But the Jitterbug home movie at the end of the VHS tape I owned at the time scared the heck out of them.
What we see and what we seem are but a dream. A dream within a dream.

The hour glass scene, when I was a small child. How awful it would be to actually see your life draining away grain by grain.

The witch's angry shriek when throws the hourglass after Dorothy escapes is also very frightening!

Every time I felt helpless / that scared little boy ( ME) even though I knew what was ahead of me in OZ/ The farm.. my mouth waters every time I see the fresh crullers!! Just the crullers remind me of my Dad's fresh doughnuts ! The anticipation of just the TV schedule made me so happy. The kids today just put in a DVD or it's online, while we had to wait a whole year just to see OZ in black & white.. then came our first color TV.. for many years we never saw the color version.. we couldn't get enough of what was on the other side of Dorothy's front door!
That green makeup of the wicked witch, really scared the bejesus out of me.. because I thought that it was a real place with people who had green skin!! Then the fact that Dorothy couldn't get into the underground shed when the tornado blew through.. it's a really scary movie for kids under 10 I think.. but all is well when Glinda first shows up, there's hope in Oz !!
As for us in the USA we need a little hope in 2017.. I think I'll watch Oz once a week .. it's a movie filled with every conceivable feeling that Frank Baum writes for his daughters.. if you get a chance , check out any of the FB books and look at the great illustrations ..
                  Cheers/ Happy & healthy 2017

So, you're a friend of Dorothy?

The tornado was what scared me when I was little. I used to run out of the room when it came on and peek into the room until Dorothy landed in Oz. I have autism and I don't like loud noises, so that's why it was so scary for me. When I was 7 and the movie was on, I ended up sitting there as the tornado scene came on and I wasn't scared anymore! 🙂
