This film contains two of the greatest scenes in film history: Lime's entrance and the final shot. Although the former is the most iconic, I'd have to say the latter is my favorite because of its emotional impact. It's one of the most brilliant, poetic, beautiful, truthful, moving.simply the most perfect scene ever filmed. I've seen the film a dozen times and it leaves me utterly shattered and in awe every viewing.

Yes, thank you! "Poetic" is the perfect way to describe that final scene.
Not only the idea of the good guy not getting the girl and her unwavering loyalty to the bad guy, but the creative execution - with that extra long take and the isolation of the surroundings - really builds up, delivers, and makes linger such an emotional impact. And this is the second time I saw a similar idea, the first being Scorsese's homage in
The Departed
, but that one doesn't feel as "shattering" or "awe-inspiring".
EDIT: Maybe it's because the moralities of the characters are reversed in
The Departed
, but in that context I still did not feel that strong an "Oh snap!" effect.
This is up there in my list of favorite closing moments in film, with
The Graduate
. That one's equally harrowing and evocative, and unscripted to boot! -

- The Ferris Wheel scene when Harry was talking about "what if one of those dots stopped moving", and when Holly felt the need to grab onto something.
- The final scene.
- Holly speaking to the literary club.

Silly little one, but where a drunken Holly looks like he is about to hit the officer and the sergeant steps in , casually hits him on the chin knocking him down, then immediately helps him up , dusting him down saying "Do take care sir" as though he had fallen down himself.

The whole chase sequence in the sewers. Even after 65 years, it's still as intense and exciting as anything from today. I remember watching it in school and secretly hoping Harry Lime would somehow escape. The charm of evil I guess.
But my favorite image from that whole sequence would be this

Definitely the very tense Riesenrad (ferris wheel) scene. I rode on it when I was in Vienna in 2013, and it really goes up high!
Second favorite scene is Harry Lime's amazing entrance in that doorway. I had my picture taken in that same doorway when I was in Vienna.
Amazing film, amazing city!
