One Bad Scene (spoiler)

The scenery and story line of this film are good but one scene near the end is far from believable. I am not trying to be overly critical but
About 20 minutes before the ending, Stewart, Paget and Chandler are coaxed out into the open to waiting cowboy ambushers. Stewart is shot 3 or 4 times and falls on the creek bank as Chandler runs towards some trees for cover. Paget grabs Stewarts knife from his belt and heads towards the gunmen. She is shot and falls back into Stewart's (now sitting upright) arms. Stewart is shot again and falls back down. A few minutes later he is standing and talking to Chandler/Cohise about getting revenge for his wife's death.
Was this supposed to be a few weeks/months later or was it really worse than
Bonanza
or
Gunsmoke
when someone gets shot and at least has their arm in a sling or are bandaged as they get on a horse to ride away.
Books and movies are usually better than real life.
