I saw this film at the New Zealand Film Festival and it was excellent. I am a huge fan of James Mason and I think that this film has to be one of his best performances. Great from start to finish and also with a suspenseful finish.
I'm surprised a classic like this isn't on DVD or VHS.
Highly recommended, you won't be disapointed. -

I saw this movie when I was young. It was very scary. In any case I saw it again around 10 years ago and I recognized someone, me. I was taking the same medicine and even though I was not going to the extremes Mason's character was I sure was acting strange. Yelling at people and not even knowing it. See the medicine is not addictive but it works so good you keep on taking it. It caused me all types of problems. I got a form of Cushings disease from it and today I still am recuperating from high doses of steroids. That movie should be required watching for anybody taking Prednison in high doses or any other type of steroid.

The expressionist techniques in
Bigger Than Life
were great. The multi coloured lighting during Ed's treatment and the lingering shadow over his son whilst trying to teach him math. But there was a more subtle example of mise en scene that I thought was an excellent touch.
During their trip to the clothing shop the sculpture of a red hand appears either in the background or to the far corner of the screen in a number of shots. The red hand sculpture is shown near Lou and Richie via the mirror along with the shadow of a mannequin in a submissive position. All a forebodence to Ed's attempt to commit murder - suicide.
