This might sound strange, but I think Christian was beautiful with both her face AND the mask. I even imagine that her face might not have been that badly scarred. It must have been the superb acting of Edith Scob. She made Christiane very angelic and fragile. Weird, maybe, but watch the movie. You might see what I mean.
or maybe I just have problems. HM-hm. -

I agree, although obviously wearing a mask would have given her a lot of interpersonal relationship problems if she/they accepted that as a solution.
What's eerie is the look with no eyebrows and no red lips, which in real life they would have probably put on just to make it 'more acceptable' to Christiane, but for the aesthetic purposes of the movie, it needed to be left as blank as possible with just her eyes showing expression. -

I see that Christiane's gowns are by Givenchy and that makes sense he was known for his high collars and 3/4 sleeves. Those elements combined with Edith Scob's swan neck and long, thin arms make her look like a bird. I was just blown away by her beauty. Her eyes, brimful of pain though they may be convey a whole host of emotions, even when you see her in long shots. Remarkable.

I also felt Christiane was beautiful with both her face and the mask. She moved with incredible grace and and her eyes and entire body were very expressive and poignant.
I agree it must have been the superb acting of Edith Scob that produced this wondrous effect. I noticed how even though I felt sorry for the girls mutilated by the doctor, none of them seemed as beautifully fragile as she did. Frankly, she made every one else seem almost ugly by comparison. Really a remarkable performance.

Edith Scob was strikingly beautiful in almost all her movies, particularly the ones directed by Georges Franju. Among them, "Judex", "La tte contre les murs", "Thrse Desqueyroux". She was absolutely remarkable in Julien Duvivier's "La chambre ardente" ("The Burning Romm"), from the John Dickson Carr novel. Even now at 70, she has still an incredible presence.
