Released in New York on this day–16 June–in 1960, Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. After some failed projects, Hitch, looking for a hit, was pitched the Robert Bloch novel of the same name. He snapped up the rights, only to discover that Paramount execs hated the idea and refused to finance it. So he financed it himself, with the studio distributing. The result was a horror classic that ground up the censorship of its era, gave us one of the single most iconic moments in cinema history (the shower murder), became the 2nd-biggest moneymaker of its year (bested at the box-office only by SPARTACUS) and landed Hitchcock an Academy Award nomination for Best Director–the first director in Academy history to be nominated for a horror movie (Hitch lost to Billy Wilder, who won for THE APARTMENT).
In later years, the film spawned 4 direct sequels, all featuring returning star Anthony Perkins, a tv movie, a ridiculous remake and a successful tv prequel/adaptation (BATES MOTEL), but the influence of PSYCHO, not only in the horror genre but in cinema in general, is immeasurable.
The trailer is a classic–Hitch takes viewers on a
6 minute
tour of the Bates Motel property.
