Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Psycho

    cbeck86 — 9 years ago(February 13, 2017 11:57 AM)

While I am sure the main reasons for discontinuing message boards are related to tracking and advertising , there is so little monitoring of the boards here most of them go way off track, no matter what the quality of the discussion may be.
This board is for Psycho . If you want to create interminable posts about new unrelated movies, SNL, and anything else with no relation to the topic a Facebook group really is a better place. You can design it as you wish, discuss anything that crosses your mind all day .
I will look for a good group discussing Psycho . I would hope anything not related to interpretation of the film, its influence or history or production will be deleted , as it should be.

Who pissed in your Cheerios ?
A SIMPLE solution to your "problem" would be NOT to click on any post clearly marked "OT." Problem solved.
Or, maybe you just like to bitch?

This is why the boards closing are not a bad idea. Make a comment about threads unrelated to the movie the board is set up for, get a reply like this.
        Good riddance.

"A reply like this" is by no means exclusive to OT threads here or elsewhere, and can be found on the boards for hundreds of films even on on-topic ones.
Although I wouldn't have put it in snarky terms, Gubbio's suggestion is entirely practical. The well-trafficked boards for films such as
          Gone With the Wind
, for instance, inevitably generate threads with topics like "Is this film racist?" which hold no interest for many visitors. Like items on a restaurant menu or the shelves of a department store, any will attract the interest of some but not others, and as a participant in many of the OT threads (guilty as charged), I'm happy for a greater rather than lesser selection and can easily pass on those not attracting mine.
I do understand your objection, as I would those who visit a public space like a city park to read, walk or nap not being especially appreciative of those who do so to throw a frisbee, run with the family dog or play with their children. By the same token, everyone not choosing to use those parks in the same ways wouldn't make their closings "not a bad idea," and OT threads are much more effortless to avoid than frisbee-throwers or frolicking children. In fact, it's
          not
avoiding OT threads that requires effort.
Your generous acknowledgement of possible "quality of the discussion" seems, to me, testament to their value, and I'm always more grateful for an engaging one wherever I find it than I am for the inevitable (but pointless, in my view, however on-topic) "Who would you cast in a remake?" or "Which is better: this film or XXXXXX?" ones.
I've found the overwhelming majority of discussions here, directly related to
          Psycho
or otherwise, representative of an assemblage of knowledgeable, thoughtful and courteous contributors (to which I've felt privileged to add my observations). In the end, though, you'll be getting what you want - no more OT threads - and I and others will be missing what we've enjoyed. If you feel that's "as it should be," I wonder if you also feel the benefit to you outweighs anyone else's loss.

I think the point is discussing the film the board is set up for covers a great deal of ground. Criticisms, different interpretations , remakes are all fair game. Where IMDB lost its way is not being able to moderate the site. Not only eliminating rude, snarky remarks but keeping things on topic creates a better experience for anyone wanting to discuss a particular film.
All of these films ( and non psycho related tv shows) have their own boards. Post there and discuss . Don't clutter the Psycho boards with unrelated topics. It isn't the personal blog of a few people which is how it comes across at times.

A revealing observation, almost in the form of a unilateral decree. You, of course, have always been as free as anyone to offer as many contributions as you like in an effort to shape the direction of the board as suits your taste, even as others here have already done. And
Where IMDB lost its way is not being able to moderate the site.
the very absence of such moderation would seem to indicate a de facto allowance of that very practice.
But as Byrdz has suggested, it's rather a moot point at this juncture and, as I noted, you'll get your wish: with the bathwater, out goes the baby (or as you put it, "good riddance").
Yet, as another observation by Byrdz has also suggested, look what's happened here: a civilized exchange of viewpoints now extending for an entire page on matters wholly unrelated to
              Psycho
              !
It does seem somehow appropriate, if you'll excuse my saying so, in these closing days when so many on any number of boards are getting things off their chests. I've found it stimulating and, the irony thereof aside, I hope you have too.

                Snarky ???
When people post in an open forum, they have to expect responses. When I see bullsht, I call it bullsht.
I'm sick and tired of political correctness. I'm sick and tired of people thinking they can tell others what to think, how to think, what to write, and how to live because these delicate snowflakes are somehow annoyed or offended. Well, that annoyance and offense works BOTH ways.
I've never understood on ANY board why people would knowingly/willingly click on the "OT," then complain about it. They'd have to be idiots.
Yes, good riddance to these board and to these delicate geniuses.

So basically you have chosen to post an OT thread complaining about OT threads and didn't identify it as OT ?
Personally, this board is a "go to" board for reading intelligent in-depth discussions BECAUSE it is off the beaten path. The OT threads are a great change from the stalkers and trolls and vendettas in such areas as FG and CFB and the various acknowledged fight boards. Just reading the posts is a treat.
With only 6 more days seems kinda pointless to be fussin' 'bout anything as small as OTness on a not very busy board but .whatever floats the ol' boat.

It is making a point that needed to be made about IMDB in general with the closing of the boards impacting all the films here.
Psycho is one of my favorite films so I do check this board and have waded through years of off topic posts cluttering the board.
Anyway enjoy the final week of discussing Saturday Night Live on the Psycho board
