Lolita is like a prequel to this movie. Then Lolita ditches her family and decides to run away to New York. Lolita = Lula Mae. Both films share some themes, and caricatures if not characters.

I came here having seen this movie 30 times but
finally getting what bothered me.
Doc marries her in the first place
then
holds her brother over her head if she don't come back.
Now older and younger men and women have found love always
but this sure felt different -

Not Buddy Ebsen.
Just the whole "something" is distasteful.
She was obviously hurt at her first home, took charge of Fred and ran away.
Ends up by Docs at her wits end, gets caught stealing food, and the moment his wife dies, Doc "proposes"
Well what else can she do?
Also the first time I looked at Doc's pic I sucked in my breath
The four in front look not much younger than her.
