They didn't have ratings until a few years later. Still, when Sarah says that all we do is drink and make love, that might have been a problem in the early 1960's, a film with sex, gambling, addition, and self-destructive behavior. That idiotic Hayes Commission was probably still existing and banning movies at that time.
Ever see The Seven Year Itch from 1955 with Marilyn Monroe? Actor Tom Ewing has her alone in his apartment in a movie about the temptation of adultery, and he never really moves on her. But yes, the Man with the Golden Arm was made the same year, and it does cover heroin addiction.
