    spoilers-
Just watched this episode the other night. In the 60's, its premise was considered 'Science-Fiction', but Today, it's becoming a social/political reality.
A computer that can tune into anyone, anywhere is way too disturbing.
And how surveillance techniques and methods have made frightening advances.
Allegory about Internet, Facebook, Hackers who can get into anyone's computers - Take it from there.
Some Sci-Fi from the past is now becoming most disquietingly relevant today, and soon to come.
I dread thinking that OBIT may eventually become a nightmare reality.

They appeared at the time this was written to be pointing an accusing finger at TV, with the suggestion being that it was getting to be like an addictive drug. But, yes, today the then fanciful reach of technology that we see in the OBIT device has in some respects become a disturbing reality. Just an excellent, and certainly prescient, script. And by the way, isn't Harry Townes terrific as the frightened scientist? That's the best performance I ever saw him give.

Totalitarian Society made easy - The Hard Way.
This episode brilliantly predicted a frightening, demoralizing future.
All Top Organizations have them - FBI, CIA, CSIS, IRS; etc. The Education System,, Work Force. The Beatings GO ON.
I wondered if a feature-length movie could be based on OBIT. It certainly would be disturbingly relevant today.
What if OBIT also has a (DELETE) button, when pushed, the subject vanishes? Perfect Murder and tool for extortion, framing, blackmail, and all the rest of those wonderful things.
People today are hopelessly hooked on Cable (and all the political rhetoric), as well as their computers and texters. A social (or anti-social) addiction, having to know if others also suffer from their tormented dilemmas.
If you owned an OBIT, what would you do with it?
Was one of Harry Townes's best. He looked and acted like someone who was driven all the way over the edge, then seeing a monster to top it off.
Back then, it sorta echoed the McCarthy Hearings.
If there is an internal Cold War today, it's even worse, with technology taking over.
        A Genuine Horror Story.

Absolutely agree! A brilliant, prescient episode that really tapped into the fears of outside observation & control. In some ways the TOL episode "The Invisibles" is a companion to this paranoid gem.

Just watched "The Invisibles". Much like 'Puppet Masters' and the 50's B film "The Brain Eaters", which Leonard Nimoy briefly appeared in, as a long-missing scientist under their control. Featured the late Ed Nelson. Always creeped me out. Bet Stefano and Stevens once saw it. Had that disturbing 50's paranoia of the Red Takeover.

Absolutely right, OP. Like a number of OUTER LIMITS episodes, OBIT was well ahead of it's time.

                Speak of the Devil!
I rewatched OBIT the other night with a few friends.
They commented on how relevant it is today - No longer "Science-Fiction", but a very disturbing reality.
WHAT IF You owned your own OBIT? What would you do with it?
Not just condemning a snoopy society which is obsessed in knowing dark things about others, but discovering dark things about themselves as well.
Truly scary & way ahead of its time.

The best episode of the series and the most still relevant today.
