    I've only been through the process once. HR had a list of applicants. I got the resumes and cover letters of people who met the bare minimum level of experience and education. The interviews are where you get to discriminate by age/race/gender. You can easily do it without the demographic section of the application as long as you have eyes and a basic understanding of human biology. That's how I ended up hiring a t̶r̶a̶n̶s̶g̶e̶n̶d̶e̶r̶ ̶G̶u̶a̶t̶e̶m̶a̶l̶a̶n̶ ̶s̶e̶n̶i̶o̶r̶ ̶c̶i̶t̶i̶z̶e̶n̶ twenty something white guy.

        Once is enough to know they don't use the demographic info for anything related to actual hiring decisions, because as the person doing it I never even saw the random filler questions.
        Like I said, there's plenty of opportunities later on to filter out people you don't like.
        Graduate from the University of Cairo - Throw that application out of if you don't want Muslims. Graduated from American University but they're still obviously middle eastern - Say I'm looking for someone more technical instead of someone from construction management because apparently that's the only ****ing job anyone from that entire region of the world ever does. Gay accent - Say they came off as unprofessional and rank them unqualified. Other accent - Questionable communication skills. Hate old people - You want someone more trainable. Hate young people - Not enough experience. Woman I'm her 20s who might spend the next 5-10 years having a couple kids with maternity leave and doctors appointments, same thing. Generic white male - Too arrogant.
        If you're going to discriminate it's not hard at all to favor a specific person or group just through the regular screening and interview process even with the guard rails and diversity training they throw at you. The only way to **** it up is if you're dumb enough to openly admit it or you have an established pattern of only hiring young girls with big tits or something.

                You actually have to be retarded to think them asking age bracket, sex/gender, parents' education level, and sexual preference isn't about anything other than filling quotas.                   You seem to be missing the point that HR isn't the one making the actual hiring decisions in most cases unless it's specifically for an HR job. They just handle the paperwork and do the initial screening, which they're not always great at either.
                  I'm going to go out in a limb here and assume you've had a job before. I know it's generous but let's go with that train of thought anyway. Now if you're like most people you probably try to get along like the guy from Office Space where you just want to get enough done to keep the bosses off your back. Most of those bosses feel the same way about theirs - there's a few power tripping assholes in there but in my experience it's not the majority. That means when you have a spot you need filled your first thought isn't "Gee, I better a black woman so I have a well rounded team." It's probably going to be "I hope at least one of these people can learn basic concepts without being a pain in my ass and wants to stick around a few years so I don't have to do this **** again."
                  If one of them had a braindead take like "I'm not getting this job because I'm a straight white male" that can easily turn into a self fulfilling prophecy. Not because of discrimination, but because they're clearly a complete ****ing idiot and that aspect spills over into every other part of their life.
                  Unless you're applying for a job at a community center for lesbian black women. If that's the case then you're probably right about it being a demographic thing but you'd still be kind of dumb for wasting your time applying there in the first place.
