Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Always wondered what a four star admiral is doing spending all his time on a single submarine bothering the captain and interfering with day-to-day operations. He's opening hatches, running up and down passageways, investigating creatures outside, giving orders to crew members. Shouldn't the highest rank in the Navy be running fleets and formulating defense strategies instead? Just seemed weird.

The Seaview was Nelson`s sub. Part of his Nelson Research Institute. Sort of an eccentric rich dude who had access to the President & the US government.

Thanks, I missed that aspect. But if it's his sub and that's all he does, 1-star would be pushing it! A Navy rich dude equivalent for sure.

Nelson got his rank in the U.S. Navy, but is officially retired from the Navy. Unofficially they press him back into service when it's a national emergency.

I watched as a child and loved it. I still enjoy it as an adult but had forgotten how reckless and almost incompetent Admiral Nelson was. He would let any yahoo on this top secret sub, let them run amock and risk ship and crew on his whims. Of course, his bad judgment made for the thrilling weekly crisis aboard the Seaview.

Well, on Star Trek, all sorts of aliens were able to board the Enterprise without being detected almost on a weekly basis. But as you said, they would have been dull episodes if those things didn't happen.
Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.
