What I was expecting to hear was the sound of the phone handset being immediately dropped, followed by the sound of footsteps running, and then the sound of a door being thrown open, and more running.

And really, what was the point of sacrificing the ambassador? He could leave the phone line open an d get to safety just like the Russians were doing.
