I agree. I saw it when I was about 9 (YIKES 30 years ago) and was terrified. Never forgot this movie and I think that it was the start of my journey into B-Horror flick addiction.

I remember seeing The Flesh Eaters shortly after seeing Alien. I have often wondered if screenwriter Dan O'Bannon based the alien "chestburster" sequence on The Flesh Eaters stomach bursting scene. Quite shocking for such an old film.

I watched my food being prepared for months after watching. I have to say that creature feature can screw with the minds of 9 year olds everywhere!

The Flesh Eaters is a fun piece of sci/fi/horror cheese. In the right hands, it could be a good remake.
The sea creature with the maw and the octopus limbs looks like the "queen mother bug" in Starship Troopers. As someone else already pointed out, TFE may have influenced Alien. Someone else also claims that TFE is similar in structure to Gilligan's Island and The Most Dangerous Game.
I like the bits of humor in the movie: Laura falls into the water while recovering her suitcase full of liquor bottles, Omar's beatnik beliefs, Murdoch putting his hand over Laura's mouth so he can talk on the airplane's radio, the deadpan expression on Bartell's face when he comments, "I don't understand the conventional use of the word 'kooky'!", etc.

Just saw this again today. It's amazing how little I remembered. It seemed much more graphic than I remember. I'm sure "Hoolihan and Big Chuck" must have edited some of it when I saw it on local Cleveland TV. Still a creepy movie all these decades later.

Holy crap, this is the only horror movie I ever had to turn off before the ending and sleep with the blanket over my head! Of course, it was circa 1979 and I was 10, watching it late at night in my dark bedroom (and my parents were asleep, which made it scarier to be the only one awake).
I actually posted on the "i need to know" message board to get the name of this movie, because I couldn't remember it and it's haunted me for years.
I have to see this movie again, and actually watch it to the end! I'm sure it won't be as scary now, but who knows.
ETA - just added it to the top of my Netflix queue. Husband won't be happy about it, but hey, it's my account!

I too saw this movie when I was very young. I was 10 I think. We lived near a drive in, (anybody remember those?)and we used to watch movies from the fence all the time, until we saw this one. I don't think I slept through the night for a week. If I recall, it was released before the ratings system, but was released with a warning. The upside is that I developed a taste for B horror flicks, and still enjoy seeing all those old "drive in" type horror movies on TV and DVD. What was the one with the killer sandworms?

I haven't seen it yet but from the reviews & comments I am seriously looking forward to thoroughly enjoying it. Of all the films I've seen when I was young the one which completely scared the living Hell out of me & gave me nightmares literally for months was "The Night Walker" directed by William Castle with the screenplay written by Robert Bloch & starring Robert Taylor, Barbara Stanwyck, Judi Meredith & the incredible Hayden Rorke. If you've never seen it, find it then wait until a very dark, cloudy night & watch it all alone. One of William Castle's best films.

I saw it when it was released, complete with the Nazi sequence, that's now an extra on the DVD. That sequence and the rest of the movie freaked me out. It's an enjoyable movie, well done for the low budget genre.
