How different is the movie from the stage play (A Shot in the Dark)?

I am of the understanding that they junked the play and told Sellers to do his Inspector Clouseau stuff.
Three thoughts:

1. Technically, I guess this is not really a Pink Panther movie?
2. Has any one ever since the play?
3. How different is the stage play from the movie?
