I have always considered this to be one of the darkest, and most cynical films made by any major studio and director. Sort of a "dark flip side of American life", showing the pointlessness and emptyness of many. The rape scene, and the ending is as grim as it gets, as Wilson's renewed body will be used for someone else's cadaver.
Interesting camera technique, but a bit too excessive at times as well. There also seems to be a simmering undercurrent of "anti-Americanism" in the story. An emptyness in our values, and a pointlessness to a lot of what we do.
I understand that some of the people involved in this production were once blacklisted, and it shows
    Regards,
    Steve

Oh no, Manchurian beats it. Through incest assumed and other great stuff. But they are both magnificent if you are overdosed on mainstreamers.
Takes the Pink Floyd line, Mother should I trust the governement, to new heights.

Dark and cynical is good. It is based in reality. Life is made from a lot more than just happy endings.

Few films illustrate just how hollow and unrewarding the tireless, yet fruitless pursuit of the American Dream can be quite as starkly and chillingly as this film.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
