This wonderful film is poorly served on the only DVD version available. The picture quality is bad and appears out of focus, and as mentioned elsewhere the picture is cropped and the soundtrack is mono, yet there was definitely a stereo soundtrack when I saw it at the ABC Cinerama in Bristol Road, Birmingham. To add insult to injury, one scene is missing from this print. I distinctly remember, in the second half of the film, a scene at harvest time which included a church celebration of harvest with the congregation singing, "We plough the fields and scatter". Farmer Boldwood is in church and can hardly sing the words of the hymn as hes so choked up with his infatuation with Bathsheba. Intercut with this scene were various shots of farm workers reaping the crops. Why was this scene cut out? Lets hope that this scene re-appears in a restored version sometime.

You must be from the UK, because there is no version that I can find in the US.
If the version you have is not restored, that is a pity, since it can be done.I wonder who has their little claws on the rights to this.
Seems to me I saw a "Studio Canal" on another MGM.
I have their Ealing Comedy Collection and the restoration is nice.
I hope something happens with this, since it is at the top of my list.

Welp, I just looked at the DVD cover image on Amazon UK, and it IS a Studio Canal release. If this is the one you have, then why, I wonder, didn't they restore it?

Just watched this movie for the first time and can't believe I hadn't seen it all the way through before. What a wonderful story well acted. When o when will they releease this as a fully restored DVD. As the main (excellent) comment on the first IMDb page of this movie says - most underrated and unbelievably short on deserved Oscars! (Just one for the music).

I remember this scene so well - Bathsheba and Frank Troy are just married - and singing together in church. It is the Harvest Home.
Poor farmer Boldwood is distraught and cannot join in the hymn.
I LOVE this film - and I can't believe they would cut anything from it.
My favourite scene is just that glance Peter Finch gives himself in his mirror when he is dressing for his party - if you've seen the movie - you'll know what I mean.
Gable Oak became my benchmark of a good man after seeing this film.

I'm hoping there might be a 40th anniversary Special Edition this year but i certainly wont buy it without checking it out on rental first .

The region 1 dvd in Canada has that scene - it actually adds 3 minutes of unreleased footage!
                  Great film..

The scene was cut from U.S. release, according to the DVD cover. It has been restored in the DVD, as noted by the previous poster. It was a treat for me as I'd seen the movie many, many times on TV and laserdisc, and I'd never seen that sequence before.
The new DVD is in anamorphic widescreen and the picture quality is excellent. There are no special features.
We report, you decide; but we decide what to report.

We just rented the DVD from Netflix in Oct. 2012 and it definitely had that scene. I noticed the lyrics of the hymn, same as in the hymn in Godspell, but a different melody "We plow the fields and scatter / the good seed on the land", and the great shot of Boldwood in the foreground pew with the new happy couple in the distance. On the disc it says: Widescreen / 20000004865 / Region 1 / 171 MINS US NOT RATED, from Turner/Warner Brothers, with the regiment on horseback riding by the church on the disc art.
The picture quality seemed fine to me. I didn't notice whether it was mono or stereo, but the sound quality was excellent.
