Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Far from the Madding Crowd

I am located in the US and I noticed that Amazon's UK site is selling a Julie Christie Collection with this film (also "The Go-Between", "Darling" and "Billy Liar"). I know the last UK release of this film (as well as "The Go-Between") was cropped. Did they fix that with this release or is it just the same poor quality prints collected into a new box? I don't want to buy this again if it is not an improvement. Thanks for any information.

I have no knowledge of anything other than you've already reported in this "thread"I remember seeing this film in the theatre, in it's initial releaseit's the ONLY film i've ever seen that stands up against David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO for it's stunning cinematography and "sweep"
Another title in the "rare but beautiful" odd movies overlooked (till very recently!) on DVD is "THE RED TENT" with Sean Connery, Hardy Kruger, and Claudia Cardenale (French, English, Italian RUSSIAN co-production, in pre-glaznost USSR!!!)-since that's come up nicely on DVD recently, there's hope for more "mainstream" (overlooked) titles like "Madding"
I wish CRITERION would pick more film like "Far from the Madding Crowd" up and add them to their catalogue! They do marvelous digital anamorphic (uncropped, un-"messed with") super-high-quality transfers of "rare" films worthy of being preserved PROPERLY on DVD.
I believe there's a "suggestion box" on the Criterion website to submit "requests"
Hopefully there's enough time to remedy this situation, before the master tapes get lost or damaged
Meanwhile so much "crap" shows up on DVD "instead", it's very disheartening.. 😕
if you find any useful information about a pending ANAMORPHIC/uncropped release on DVD, please post it here, or let me know! Thanks.
      David A. Lewis,
