Ok, looks like your everyday WW 2 movie until they get to the bar scene. I seems that all the women in the bar just stepped out of the '60 with their dresses and hair-dos. Also some of the GI hair cuts and bandanas. Not exactly 1943-44. Other than that, it's movie that would see several times over no problem. Richard Jaeckel is the best.
How many times did Carroll O'Connor play a general?

yeah, finer details werent really that much of an issue to the people who made the film. you're right about the women. Their uniforms are wrong too though. A great many of the Canadians (when they arrived at the camp in the beginning) are wearing the '49 pattern battledress jackets, some are wearing helmets for headgear-they were better equipped than that, they would have had some kind of soft headgear.
Once the force is in uniforms, those are wrong too, theyre wearing the "Ike Coat" with their dress uniforms instead of the four pocket class A uniform prevalent at that time in the war. at NO time did they ever wear red berets, and they certainly wouldnt have had officers crossed arrows to use as cap badges.
what I like about the film is it captures the essence of the fssf, the stuff they show is the same kinds of things that they did

That's a problem with most 60s war movies. All the women look like their hairdos are held together with a gallon of hairspray.

They at least are a whole lot more time-set than Donald Sutherland in Kelley's Heroes.

Yep, Kelley's Heroes certainly added the 60's vibe with Oddball, but they threw him in for comedy, so the movie didn't take itself seriously. Now I wonder how Kelley's Heroes would have been if there was a Band of Brothers/Private Ryan realism added in. It wouldn't be pretty or humorous.

I think we'd end up with Three Kings with a bunch more guys and firepower. Might not be such a bad movie.
