Nothing like seeing a load of great British actors shouting for two hours, with a big battle in the middle

I agree, if there is a film with Alec Guinness, Richard Harris, Timothy Dalton and Charles Gray, it is a must see.
And let us not forget the music, production and costume design, photography.
By the way, why is it so hard to find this movie?
"What If" is a game for scholars.

I agree too. The production values you mentioned were top notch to me. The music is something that has stuck with me for years. I particularly liked some of the cavalry charges, like the one from the view of the horses. Great idea.
Too bad a long mini-series could not have been made with all the actors and production values kept throughout. 1630 to 1660s was an interesting period of English history.

I am laughing at the thought of this film being used in a History class, since it is full of Historical innacuracies.
For starters,Cromwell was NOT a Major Puritan leader in Parliament before the Civil War Broke out, and he was not one of the five members listed for arrest in the act which triggered the war. He was very much a backbencher before his military leadership made him prominent.
And his prayer at Edgehill "Lord thou knowest how busy I must be this day, ete, etc" was indeed said at Edgehill..but by a general on the Royalist side.

Never said any of that, presuming it is I you are responding to. Maybe that person "electricsunflare" farther back up the thread is the one you meant to address. I think you're one of these posters who just puts their comment into the thread at the end regardless of who you are responding to.

Agreed. I would add, that Cromwell was also not a major military leader from the beginning. That was after the New Model Army came into existence later in the war. I think a lot of the actions as well as words attributed to Cromwell in this film rightfully belong to other historical personages. I guess for the sake of limiting the number of actors they combine several people into one character. Gone With the Wind was like that. -

Pedant .filtering out gnats and missin the substance .Unable with your long thread to capture what most people would see in it - punchy fighting stuff at the heart of a democracy in restoartion ,
You just don't like that a man of faith could be so influential . How did he stay Lord Protector for 5 years unless the man had some substance.
It is a disgrace that this film is so hard to find . Its offence is that doesn't make a hero of mere reactionary. -

False. I was not excessively obsessed with details. I clearly mentioned more than once something of the "big picture".
Your spelling and punctuation are substandard. Retake English grammar.
Unable with your long thread to capture what most people would see in it -
Incorrect. It was not a long thread; it fit almost into one screen. I did capture some of what most would see in it.
punchy fighting stuff at the heart of a democracy in restoartion ,
Your subjective opinion.
You just don't like that a man of faith could be so influential .
Never said one earthly thing that could be construed as such. You are imagining.
How did he stay Lord Protector for 5 years unless the man had some substance.
I never said, or implied, that he no substance.

Erroneous. It is easy to find on amazon.com.
Its offence is that doesn't make a hero of mere reactionary.
Gibberish. And whatever you meant it is probably another of your subjective opinions.
