OK, I'll keep it brief. jeremy3 you are a total idiot. Your taste in, and criticism of movies is a joke, and the words you type, well, no one wants to read them.

You sir, are an idiot.
As self-centred as Carter, you see no further than your own desires.
This film did not satisfy your desires and so you crave the desire for others to worship you as a film critic with your pathetic summary.
You fail as a critic as you fail in other aspects of life. -

The Stallone version was a piece of dog droppings compared to the original. It was not "OK"; it stunk.
You clearly didn't understand the intent of the original movie if you thought the audience was supposed to like Carter. -

I'm guessing you are American and fairly young. I base this on your opinion of the Stallone version vs the Caine version. This movie is highly regarded one of the best British gangster movies ever made and you obviously can't see what has been in front of you.

Jack Carter shouts this line when he is trying to make sense of why his brother, a good guy, was killed. He knows it should be him in the coffin because he's the bad egg of the family.
You are not meant to have empathy for Jack, he has none for himself, so you have missed the point of the narrative strengths I'm sad to say.
