The most recent version is slated for release in 2006. This is Jimmy McGovern's Mary, Queen of Scots, starring Bryce Dallas Howard (The Village, How the Grinch Stole Christmas) in the title role.
Previous films about the Queen of Scots include:
1971 - Mary, Queen of Scots - with Vanessa Redgrave and the incomparable Glenda Jackson.
1940 - Das Herz der Koenigin - German film released in USA as "Heart of a Queen" and in Australia as "Mary, Queen of Scots - mit Zarah Leander as Mary, Queen of Scots, Axel van Ambesser as Henry Darnley, und Maria Koppenhoefer as Queen Elisabeth of England
Historical note: In the early days of Elizabeth's reign, and when she was a child, the name was still spelled with an 's' Elisabeth. This spelling followed the old rule, borrowed from French (which still uses it), that 's' between two vowels is pronounced 'z.' The spelling convention changed to 'z,' and Elizabeth changed the spelling of her name accordingly, a few years after she became Queen.
1936 - Mary of Scotland (aka Mary, Queen of Scots) - with Katharine Hepburn as Mary, Frederic March as Bothwell, and Florence Eldredge as Elizabeth. Also featured John Carradine (father of David, Keith and Robert) as Rizzio.
This film has some great lines as in the big trial scene, where Mary asks where the English queen is. "Her Majesty is here symbolically," she is told, by a man who gestures to a crown on an empty chair. When Mary, who has continued to stand the whole time (thus, nobody else can sit down - because she's still a royal person even if she is on trial) when Mary is invited to rest herself, she says, "I shall sit symbolically."
1927 - Maria Stuart, Teil 1 und 2 German silent movie with Magda Sonja as Mary, Fritz Kortner as Marschall Bothwell, Walter Janssen as Lord Darnley, and no Queen Elizabeth (or Elisabeth) anywhere in sight.
1925 - Mary, Queen of Tots - The Little Rascals star in this silent film that is very, very, very loosely related to the subject of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary, played here by Mary Kornman, is a little girl who gets a gift of four dolls (a "Four Maries" motif, here) and has a dream in which they come to life. At some point the dolls are taken away by Mary's evil governess and she has to get them back.
1923 - The Loves of Mary, Queen of Scots - British silent picture starring Fay Compton as Mary, Ellen Compton as Elizabeth (apparently her only film role), Gerald Ames as Bothwell, Ivan Samson as Dudley, nobody listed as Darnley, and a 31-year old Basil Rathbone making his fourth film appearance in an uncredited role.
1895 - The Execution of Mary Stuart - Undoubtedly the earliest film on the subject, this short piece was produced by Thomas Edison and starred Robert Thomae as Mary. And people thought "La Cage Aux Folles" was a break-through for drag queens! -

I opened this thread two years ago and forgot all about it. How fascinating and exciting all the posts here turned out to be! I still think Gwyneth Paltrow would be a wonderful Mary, but thanks to your comments I gather that Ron Howard's daughter will be playing her soon in an upcoming film. I saw THE VILLAGE and I think she is a very promising actress, charismatic and beautiful as well. I look forward to seeing her interpretation.
