One of the things that dragged
Dillinger
down for me was its portrayal of Melvin Purvis. Melvin Purvis was a heroic character who was in over his head during the Dillinger hunt. But Ben Johnson makes him the 1930s version of Dirty Harry. I think Clint Eastwood would have been good. Mostly because he looked pretty good for 43 in the year 1973 and would have been very good in the film.

Keep in mind that this was an AIP production - Milius wouldn't have had anywhere near the money, let alone the clout (given that it was his first major directing job), to get a huge star like Eastwood for the part. Still, I can't really object to that suggestion.

Jack Nickolson looks like Purvis, is about the same height may have been too pricey at that time, but would have been a good fit.
I've always thought that Oates was the best Dillinger I've seen, better than the Bogart and Teirney varieties.
A childhood friend of mine is a grand-nephew of Dillinger. I haven't seen him in years, but he was always charming and funny, smart and mischievous like a Huck Finn type, and also part psycho 50 years ago his MD dad was giving him Lithium or something to calm him down. Whatever it is, seems to run in the family. -

This would be tough if casting Purvis in a 1970s movie, yeah I Johnson was too old to play the part at 54, One pick that I though would be good if he dyed his hair, Robert Redford (who would had been 37 at the time) if not then it would have been Dustin Hoffman.Jack Nicholson would had been a great choice was well
