Action packed but middling

The action sequences are frequent and potent - lots of gunfire! Bam Bam Bam! But the shooting and editing is barely competent. This is one of those movies that make you cringe at the awkward special effects artlessly edited. Better filmmakers, like Coppola, Scorcese, Penn, DePalma could make a cheap production like this look good, but John Milius just can't do it.
Despite a really excellent cast (with the exception of Michelle Phillips), they don't have much to do. Phillips really stinks and was never much of an actress.
The locations are sets are pretty nice too, as are the costumes, but the screenplay is full of cliches and the whole things looks a little cheap and forced. Unfortunately Milius never really improved as a director. -

It's pretty good, but tiresome. I mean you can take only so many shootouts in a movie before you stop paying attention. And it's too long for its own good - superb until halfmark where it just keeps going nowhere (or you know where). Great actors by the way, it's stuffed with stars!

Yes it's not really that good but I take off my hat to Milius for doing it the way he saw it. He didn't direct it badly, it was his way of seeing things that is the problemas you say, lots and lots of action and faulty editing, but what actually irritates me is the cartoonish quality, behavior-wise, of the gang. I guess Milius saw them as big kids, but it just isn't fun for me, considering the bloodshed. If you don't take it too seriously it is okay, so my problem is I did take it too seriously.
