I just watched Walking Tall with The Rock and came here to talk about it and discovered that 1) it is a remake and 2) that it is inspired by a true story.
I am amazed to see that Pusser is not as well-known as he should. I guess he is renowned in the South but not in the rest of the country (I live in Arizona).
In my mind Truly the toughest Sheriff in America. Compared to that, Joe Arpaio is a joke. -

Pusser truly was a tough Sheriff and a lot more honest than some of the people who are trying to tarnish his name today. Thank God Dwana Pusser is alive to defend her Father's legacy, because if she was not here, then all of his enemies would succeed in their lies!

Pusser is well known in Tennessee, but not in Alabama or really any other southern state because he wasn't from around them.
And yes, I agree that Pusser should get WAY more recognition. He fought so damned hard, his wife died, and in the end he died under mysterious circumstances. It pisses me off that only a few people did something about the corruption in the town.
But back in the 1970s, what was known as the Dixie Mafia was very prevalent, and Pusser efforts to stop it were widely known, but unfortunately has faded away from the limelight.

Pusser was pretty hardcore, I'm not gonna lie, and I do admire the man, but this fantasy about him being this totally righteous man is just that, a fantasy. He was pretty much police brutality incarnate, and he broke more laws than he enforced in his quest for justice. Still, all that aside, great sheriff and man.

Joe Arpaio is a joke whether he's compared to Pusser or not. Forcing inmates to eat inedible food and do without air in the baking sun hardly makes one "tough." Under those standards, I guess Torquemada was a tough guy.

Joe Arpaio is a hero to so many, and for good reason. It's not whether or not he is "tough", but that he is right. He is absolutely right to put those sacks of s$%t through some suffering. It doesn't matter what their crimes were, they broke the law and deserve at least as much punishment as their victims received. This is not "eye for an eye", it is refreshing justice. How do you suppose it feels for the victims when they know their attackers or offenders are being treated as well as they do in our pansy jails? How about a low-income rape victim knowing her rapist has cable in his cell? The criminal justice system is a joke everywhere except in Maricopa County in Arizona and, for a while, McNairy County in Tennessee.
I absolutely love the fact that Arpaio refuses to allow the criminals to be treated better than the military. Priceless. -

It would appear that the definition of "Tough" is the operative word here. While Joe Arpaio may not be out kicking butt and taking names ala Pusser, he is tough none the less. Especially in today's politically correct and litigious climate, it is tough for an elected official to take a stand and do the right thing. oversplayer wrote "Forcing inmates to eat inedible food and do without air in the baking sun" presupposes one element, that the criminals serving time in Sheriff Joe's county had no choice in their fate. Untrue! If you don't want to live in those conditions, in the words of Jim Carey in Liar Liar, "STOP BREAKING THE LAW, @$$HOLE!" Jails, in every jurisdiction, should be places people DON'T WANT TO GO! Not some place where they can study law and file frivolous lawsuits and further burden the already strained legal system. Three squares and a cot is all that is needed. No cable, no air, no weight room, nothing but time to contemplate their crimes.
I admire both men!
